The flaps bordering Caterxew's mouth mimic eyes, making it seem more imposing to smaller creatures. It primarily frightens off Caterpie so it can steal their meals.

They mark their territory by leaving gashes in trees with their tusks. Its voracious appetite compels it to devour leaves bigger than itself without hesitation.
