Because Happitump have mostly been found near broken Pokémon Eggs, many thought they were born of the spirits of the unhatched Pokémon. It was later discovered that they are the ones who break these eggs to feast on the yolks within.
These Pokémon are stumps possessed by the spirits of children who died in the forest. It loves round white things.
