Legends say that Ho-ter appears to youths as a test of courage. It is said that if the child looks past its intimidating glare and reaches toward the rainbow fire in its claws, they are rewarded with a happy life for the rest of their days.

If a Ho-ter beckons you while it is floating in darkness, don't approach it. Its feathers--which glow in seven colors depending on the angle at which they are struck by light--are thought to bring joy.
