Manepert's fins function as lightning rods and it uses them to detect oncoming storms via changes in electromagnetic fields. It will then bury its fins under boulders during storms to avoid attracting incoming bolts and causing forest fires.

If it senses the approach of a storm and a tidal wave, it protects its seaside nest by piling up boulders. Because lightning falls in their vicinities, Manepert were thought to have been born from lightning.
