The member of Dugdew with the largest bud is the leader, and takes the front when digging tunnels. The other two protect it fiercely, as nutrients gained from the leader's photosynthesis are needed to keep all three alive.
Over the winter, it closes its bud and endures the cold. Because the triplets originally split from one body, they think exactly alike.
