Surkern rest on open water in an effort to avoid land-based predators. They spend most of their time conserving energy, but are capable of sudden bursts of speed across the water's surface if they feel threatened.

Surkern try to minimize movement to conserve the nutrients they have stored in their bodies for evolution. They gather on puddles after evening downpours, gliding across the surface of water as if sliding.
