Although the bottom of its body is soft and tender, the top is as hard as stone. If it becomes both beached on its back and becomes unable to move from its spot, it licks its squishy half to paint on a mucus that helps it retain moisture.

On sunny days, schools of Shelltine can be seen elegantly leaping over the waves. At night, it burrows a hole in the seafloor with its broad tongue to make a place to sleep.
