Payena rely on fungal pheromones to determine who is friend or foe. They often become aggressive when encountering a foreign scent.

Payena's powerful mouthparts can chew through solid wood. If anyone approaches as it feeds on a tree root, it will turn around to growl, biting forcefully if that warning is ignored.

It savagely threatens foes with bared fangs. A Payena has parasitic tochukaso mushrooms growing on its back.
