The fins on Mudtortle's heads act like radars, helping them sense their surroundings. By tucking their bodies into their shells and spinning their tails like propellers, they can move through the water at high speeds.

Its large tail is covered with rich, thick fur that deepens in color with age. On land, it can powerfully lift large boulders by planting its four feet and heaving.
